Paper out: Hydrocolloid-based coatings applied on biobased/biodegradable food flexible packaging, A review

Hydrocolloid-based coatings applied on biobased/biodegradable food flexible packaging, A review. Part 1 – Biopolymer to coat and available technologies.

We are excited to share with you the latest publication of our work♻️

This review focuses on the use of hydrocolloid-based coatings to enhance the properties of biobased and biodegradable flexible food packaging films. These films often have insufficient intrinsic properties, which can be improved by applying coatings made from proteins, polysaccharides, or their composites. Such coatings can significantly boost the barrier, surface, and mechanical performance of sustainable packaging while maintaining biodegradability and food safety. The paper details various coating technologies, including both dry (e.g., extrusion-lamination) and wet (e.g., spray coating) methods, and highlights the importance of surface treatments like plasma activation for optimal adhesion. Ultimately, the review aims to inform the development of advanced, eco-friendly packaging films.
